Things to Consider When Buying a 5G Wireless Router
February 23, 2022
A 5G wireless router can deliver fast and reliable Wi-Fi within a large coverage area. It is not an easy task to pick the perfect 5G router, especially if it is not clear what capabilities the router can provide. There is no need to worry! We have prepared a list of things to consider when buying a 5G wireless router.
What do the Terms “5Ghz band” and “2.4Ghz band” Refer To?
A band is a range of frequencies which are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum contains many frequencies, including the range (or band) of frequencies that we refer to as “visible light.” However, the part of the spectrum that is used for telecommunications isn’t visible with just your eyes - like how the energy from a microwave or x-ray machine is not visible to the naked eye.
What is 5G Wi-Fi?
There is a set of rules that network devices manufacturers have to follow to pass traffic on the 5Ghz (5G) wireless band. 5Ghz communications use a wireless protocol, i.e. 802.11ac. 5G is a marketing term used to refer to 802.11ac, and the standards for inter-operability on the 5Ghz spectrum are the wireless protocol 802.11. The 5Ghz band is a relatively fast communicator of data, but only at short distance. It’s also much more easily affected by signal interference from various obstacles and weather.
Wi-Fi Bands
The main Wi-Fi bands are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Dual-band routers have the option to use either of the bands. Dual band technology can help you benefit from high-speed 5G Wi-Fi without much congestion.
Wi-Fi Standards
Router are designed to be used for a number of years and provide the best performance they can, limited only by their internal components. It is best to ensure that your router supports the latest standard, which is 802.11ac. Such a modern router can support up to Gigabit speeds, much faster than the previous 600Mbps limit.
Real-life Speed of the Router
When you read the specifications of a wireless router, you see theoretical numbers measured in labs with perfect networking equipment. This doesn’t have much to do with real-life circumstances. Read the user reviews online to make sure you won’t be disappointed with the equipment you purchase after connecting it to your devices.
Security
Safety is always important, regardless of the Wi-Fi band you are using. Unfortunately, wireless networks can be very insecure. When selecting the best router to buy, make sure it supports at least the WPA2 encryption standard. It is also necessary to ensure that every device on the network supports WPA2 for this to work. Remember, your network is only as well protected as the least secure device connected to it.
